The Basic Leader Training program is the culmination of more than several years of
work by professionals and volunteers from throughout the nation. Their goal was to
revise and update the volunteer leader training materials for the Boy Scouts of
America. The result is a seamless training program that helps leaders easily graduate
through the courses quickly and with little duplication.

A direct contact Scout leader is considered fully trained and entitled to wear the
Trained leader emblem when he or she has completed the following training courses
and the specific training for the position.

Leader-Specific Training
These training courses include leader specific training for Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and
Venturing leaders; an introduction to outdoor leader skills; and the new Wood Badge
course.  Cub Scout Leader Specific Training can be done online at
www.myscouting.scouting.org.
BALOO Training
(Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) is a supplemental course designed to teach
adults how to plan and execute an outdoor activity for Cub Scout groups.  It is the entry
level introductory outdoor training of the Boy Scouts of America.  This training is
required for any adult who is in charge of planning a pack campout.

Youth Protection Training
Youth Protection training is required for all registered adult volunteers.  At all times,
youth safety is the number one priority. At the same time, adults need to know the rules
for keeping themselves safe, too. Comprehensive Youth Protection training teaches all
the do’s and don’ts of working with youth. The training is offered online at
www.
myscouting.scouting.org, or it may be taken as part of an district or council training
course.
Training Recertification
Most training courses do not require recertification. However, there are exceptions as
follows: Trainer’s EDGE (3 years), Paddle Craft Safety (3 years), Swimming and Water
Rescue (3 years), Climb On Safely (2 years), Trek Safely (2 years), Safe Swim Defense
(2 years), Safety Afloat (2 years), Chain Saw Safety (2 years), and Youth Protection
training (2 years). National Camping School certification is good for five camping
seasons..
Fast Start Training
Fast Start training is the first step for any new volunteer and is recommended (but not
required) before he or she meets with any youth member.  This training should be done
online at
www.myscouting.scouting.org. (If you are new to Scouting, you will be asked to
create an account.)

This is Scouting
This Is Scouting is a new online training session with six modules of training: The
Mission of Scouting, Programs for All ages, Scouting Is Fun, Scouting in the
Community, Keeping Our Youth Safe, and Scouting’s Legacy. This supplemental
training takes about an hour to complete online at
www.myscouting.scouting.org. (If you
are new to Scouting, you will be asked to create an account.) This is great for the first
time leader with little or no previous scouting experience.
Supplemental Training
Fast Start and This is Scouting are great beginner courses for the first time leader.
They can be completed online.
